Gov Poll: Brownback Tops Holland

Nothing surprising here -

The first Rasmussen Reports Election 2010 survey of that contest finds Brownback earning support from 55% of likely voters in the state to Holland’s 33%. Four percent (4%) like some other candidate, and eight percent (8%) remain undecided.

Most reassuring is that voters not affiliated with either major party prefer the Republican by 14 points. Good to see that independents are coming back to the RIGHT side.

And a for a good laugh, though hardly known at all - seven percent (7%) of the state’s voters view Holland very favorably, and six percent (6%) have a very unfavorable opinion of him.

Amazingly the money in the Big First is still fairly close. Huelskamp leads in amount raised and cash on hand but this early - anything can happen. Barnett has also previously run statewide so may have a leg up on the name ID. Huelskamp and Barnett also represent state senate districts within the first - Wasinger and Mann are relatively new candidates on the scene. We'll keep our eyes out for a poll in the race - but from the looks of it, anyone could walk away from the crowded primary a winner.

Kansas Senate Poll

A new poll finds Rep. Jerry Moran leading Rep. Todd Tiahrt 40-33% in the race for the Republican primary for the U.S. Senate seat now held by Sam Brownback. Compared to an identical SurveyUSA poll released 2 months ago, Moran is up 3 points. Tiahrt is down 1.

27% were still undecided - still a sizeable chunk this early out. Tiahrt recently went up on TV - we'll see if that can help him star swaying some of the undecideds his way. The only analysis we can make at this point is that this is going to get heated, quickly!

Check Americans for Prosperity's new site (http://www.kstaxalert.com) Kansas Tax Alert, where people can sign up for e-mails.

State Director Derrick Sontag says the group will send out an alert whenever a bill raising taxes is introduced in the House or Senate. Clicking on the alert will then allow recipients to send e-mails to legislators.

Sontag says the goal is to allow Kansans to contact their legislators quickly.

And taxes are on legislators' agenda this year. Gov. Mark Parkinson has proposed increasing sales and tobacco taxes to close a budget shortfall.

New Poll: Who will Brownback choose for Lt Gov

Rumors are starting to fly about who Senator Brownback will pick to serve as his lieutenant governor. We've posted a new poll but would love to hear your suggestions as well!

Some of the most likely candidates
- Retiring Secretary Ron Thornburgh who dropped out of the race for governor and would pull in some moderates for Brownback
- 3rd district candidate and former state Senator Nick Jordan - this would help avoid a nasty Republican primary in the 3rd and pull in some Kansas City votes for the Senator. Also would leave Yoder as the front runner for the 3rd who is a bit more moderate for the district that voted for Obama in 2008
- State Senator Jeff Colyer - also pulls in Kansas City votes and money for the senator, as well as experience in the health field. The two also served as White House fellows and are rumored to be close

Other possibilites could be Moran or Tiahrt if one of them decides to drop out of the race for the Republican nomination for Senate, Brownback's former chief of staff Rob Wasinger if he decided to get out of the crowded primary for the 1st district, Kris Kobach if he gets out of the SoS race - close with Brownback since serving as state party chair, or Jim Barnett if he were to drop out of the primary in the 1st - he's already got some statewide name ID after running for Gov against Sebelius.

Holland's In....Maybe

State Senator Tom Holland may run against Lynn Jenkins - no wait, now he may run against Sam Brownback for Governor. Good decision, if you're not well known enough to mount a credible challenge in the 2nd district you should definitely go ahead and give statewide a shot.

According to the Cap Journal - State Sen. Tom Holland, of Baldwin City, said he will decide soon whether to seek the Democratic nomination. "Several people have approached me about running for governor," Holland said. "I'm actively considering it."

At year end, Holland reported raising $7,700 last year and currently has $12,900 COH. Holland won his senate seat in 2008 against incumbent Roger Pine. Although this was an impressive win in a year where Kansas only got more Red - winning on 48% of his own district doesn't exactly bode well for a statewide race against Brownback who will likely outspend him 10 to 1.

Parkinson Likes Taxes?

Parkinson likes taxes - who knew? Guess it's a good thing he left the party or we'd all be demanding he did.

Last night Governor Parkinson, in his State of the State, proposed a sales tax increase of 1 percent and a 55-cent per pack increase in cigarette taxes. We'll give it to him - he has a terrible job of attempting the balance the budget, now more than $300 million in the red. The sales tax hike would expire after three years unless lawmakers voted to continue it but the cigarette tax appears to be permanent.

Republican forces already appear to be lining up against the proposal but will the Governor be able to tug at the hearts of Moderates - vowing to save education funding and win votes?

“Raising taxes in a recession is exactly the wrong policy,” said Sen. Jeff Colyer, an Overland Park Republican.

Mike Maddox, chairman of the Kansas Chamber board: “If Kansas is going to experience a sustained economic recovery and growth, businesses will lead the way by growing jobs. Nothing will hinder the recovery and economic growth more than increasing the tax burden on our citizens.”

President Obama's approval rating on handling health care is at an all-time low, according to a new CBS News poll, something that is helping to drag down his overall approval rating.

Just 36 percent of Americans approve of Mr. Obama's handling of health care, according to the poll, conducted from Jan. 6 – 10. Fifty-four percent disapprove.

Barry, Barry - when will you give up on this government takeover of the health care system? The reason people are losing their health care is because they're losing their jobs! Lets focus on the economy and getting private industry to start booming again instead of government growth.

Six Supports Corrupt "Nebraska Compromise"?

We've been upfront about the disaster that is the "health care reform" bill that's barreling its way through Congress. Led by Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, the Democrats will stop at nothing to get anything passed; no matter who gets run over, shafted, or what crooked deals need to be made to appease skeptics.

The fact Nebraska will never have to pay for Medicaid coverage in the future, sticking states such as Kansas with the bill, is downright criminal. Thankfully, Republican lawmakers here in Kansas are putting pressure on Democrat Attorney General Steve Six to join the other 13 state attorney generals that are objecting to such a deal.

Six is a relative unknown in Kansas politics. He was appointed by Queen Kathleen after their poster boy Paul Morrison was forced out after an infidelity scandal a few years back. What we do know about Six is that he's the typical Kansas Democrat that campaigns as not being a Democrat in order to get elected.

So where does he stand on letting Nebraska get this Medicaid deal? So far, only silence.

It's time Six takes a stand for or against the typical Washington corruption that Kansans are sick and tired of. So where are you Mr. Six? Kansans are waiting to hear where you stand.

A New Year's Eve Shocker: Laura Kelly Drops Out

Early this morning the Topeka Capital Journal broke some good news - JV candidate Laura Kelly is dropping her bid to take on Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins in the 2nd district. Kelly claims demands of conducting the U.S. House campaign and responsibilities of being a member of the State Senate were incompatible. The obligation to serve her constituents proved stronger than the desire to defeat Jenkins, she said. "I can't do this race and do the Senate," Kelly said.

Our thoughts: As an extremely liberal member of the Kansas State Senate who will probably have to vote for a tax increase this year, loves unions and would support everything Pelosi pushes - Kelly just didn't stand a chance against Jenkins. So what's the REAL reason Kelly is dropping out? A personal scandal? Can she really not run a campaign and govern at the same time? Could she not raise money in a climate that has become toxic for Democrats (especially here in Kansas)? Maybe she just doesn't have the fire in her to run a rigorous campaign. I guess we'll take her at her word.

Nancy Boyda got 46% of the vote in 2008 against Jenkins in the general election. We'd estimate that number is padded with an extra 2-3% from people turning out for Obama. Kelly really isn't known outside of her district and would need a lot of money to get her name out there. We'd guess against Jenkins in the general in 2010 - Kelly would have been lucky to break 42%.

We'll go ahead and add Laura Kelly to the 'Democrat Candidates That Weren't' Club - Tom Wiggins, Greg Orman, Dan Glickman, Mark Parkinson...So let's recap. Democrats are now without a candidate for U.S. Senate, Governor, the 2nd Congressional seat, the 3rd Congressional Seat, and pretty much, the 1st Congressional seat.

We can hear Democrats saying: Help us Raj Goyle, you are our only hope.

Senate ObamaCare: It's Finally Here

The Democratic Party’s decades-long push to insert more government control into our U.S. health care system cleared a major hurdle early Monday morning, with the Senate voting to advance a massive $871 billion bill to extend coverage to nearly all Americans and tighten regulations on private insurers.

If the Senate passes the bill as expected — after two more procedural votes this week and a final vote set for 7 p.m. Christmas Eve — House and Senate negotiators will begin the arduous process of melding two substantially different bills. Democrats are optimistic they can reach a final compromise, but that is by no means ensured.

Welcome to the Senate - Senator Huntington

State Representative Terrie Huntington was elected tonight to replace retiring state Senator David Wysong. Huntington will compete the last three years of Wysong’s second term and could run for re-election to the Senate in 2012.

Huntington was unopposed and was voted in by the precinct committees. The State Senate 7th District consists of some 61 precincts in Fairway, Leawood, Merriam, Mission, Mission Hills, Mission Woods, Overland Park, Prairie Village, Roeland Park, and Westwood.

Congrats Terrie! Enjoy your new larger majority in the Senate. Though they are nasty, those 9 Democrats can't put up much of a fight against the 31 Republicans.

Schmidt, Schmidt He's Our Man

Senators Sam Brownback and Pat Roberts today endorsed State Senator Derek Schmidt for Attorney General. Schmidt is running against replacement-incumbent Stephen Six.

Six was appointed in January of 2008 by Sebelius after Democrat Paul Morrison was disgraced out of office after a sexual harassment claim was made against him by a former employee and fling.

We're optimistic that Schmidt whose name will appear two offices under Sam Brownback on the ballot - who is currently unopposed again - will be able to win on Republican turnout alone. Though he's also more than qualified and working hard to win the office. We're looking forward to bring the Attorney Generals office back to the Right side.

Government Health Care Fails Again

Health officials are recalling hundreds of thousands of doses of swine flu vaccine after tests indicated they may not be potent enough to protect against the virus.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notified doctors about the recall Tuesday. The recall involves about 800,000 doses made by Sanofi Pasteur. The doses are pre-filled syringes intended for young children, ages 6 months to almost three years.

Health officials recommend children those ages get two doses, spaced about a month apart.

Health officials say it's not clear how many doses have already been given, but they don't think children need to be re-vaccinated. The lots passed potency tests when they were first shipped, but tests indicate the potency waned after.

A little awkward that this comes a day after Governor Parkinson hung out with 'Sid the Science Kid' to promote the H1N1 vaccine. “In some cases, we have supply that is actually not being used,” he said. Good thing we've got some extra here in Kansas since apparently kids that think they're vaccinated - may not be. This is just a preview of what's to come when the government runs our health care system.

Obama Plans Gitmo Move to Illinois

Whew - at least it's not Leavenworth, Kansas. Though we think the majority of American's will still not be supportive of President Obama's decision to bring known terrorists into his old back yard for no reason other than the current detention center in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba has a 'bad stigma'.

Clearly we rarely ever see eye to eye with Barry - but doesn't it seem like a good thing for terrorists to detest the idea of Gitmo? Ya know, so they won't want to plot attacks against us and risk being held there?? Crazy idea, we know. At least Senators Brownback and Roberts are on board with us.

Kansas Senators Pat Roberts and Sam Brownback say they are relieved that suspected terrorist detainees won't be coming to Kansas. And they still think bringing the detainees to the United States is a bad idea. They say moving detainees to the United States creates more risk for the public with no clear gain.

Illinois Governor Pat Quinn is pleased, though, that President Obama has decided to have the federal government buy an Illinois prison....schocking!

KS-03 Yoder's In

State Representative Kevin Yoder confirmed today that he will seek the Republican nomination for the 3rd district to replace retiring Rep. Dennis Moore. Yoder joins 2008 nominee Nick Jordan, and previously filed candidates - Lightner, Scherer, Rysavy and Gilyeat. Semi-incumbent nominee Jordan raised just over $1.1 million for the race last year - but that was in 08 when the field was pretty clear for him. We're guessing Yoder looked over Jordan's FEC reports before deciding if he could mount a credible challenge.

“Having led the fight in Topeka to reign in government spending, we are now prepared to take this battle to Washington ,” Yoder continued. “A reckless disregard for the future economic well-being of our children and grandchildren has become all too common in our nation’s capitol.”

Rep. Yoder’s campaign will be focused on bringing fiscal sanity back to Washington , common-sense solutions to create jobs for Kansans, reducing the cost of quality health care, and protecting services for seniors. “We deserve an experienced leader who will stand up to Congress on job-killing policies such as ‘cap-and-trade’, ‘card check’, and the government takeover of health care.”

Some say Jordan had his chance and should step aside, others say Yoder's too young and can wait. We just hope the two don't destroy each other in a nasty primary and let the to-be-named Democrat run away with the seat. I think we all can agree that either of these guys is a million times better than Dennis Moore the Sequel.

KS-03 The Field Narrows

State Senator Jeff Colyer announced he would not seek the Republican nomination for Kansas' 3rd dirstrict. He also went ahead and endorsed former candidate, Nick Jordan.

“I love public service and enjoy campaigning, but now is not the right time for me to be a congressional candidate,” Colyer said in the statement. “However...I’m proud to endorse Nick Jordan. Nick is experienced, honest, and effective."

Looks like State Rep. Kevin Yoder and Nick Jordan are becoming the final major players still considering joining the race (joining Lightner, Gilyeat, Scherer and Rysavy who have already filed for the seat with the FEC).

Republicans Leading Generic Ballot

Republicans lead Democrats in a test of generic congressional matchups, a new poll found Thursday.

42 percent of likely voters said they would prefer a generic Republican candidate for Congress versus 38 percent who said they would prefer a generic Democrat, according to a Bloomberg News poll released yesterday.

16 percent said they were unsure who they'd support, while four percent answered not voting.

FOX NEWS POLL: “A Majority -- 57 Percent -- Oppose The Health Care Reform Legislation Being Considered Right Now. About A Third Of Americans -- 34 Percent -- Favor The Reforms.”

NYT/CBS NEWS POLL: “And 42 Percent Approve Of The Way [President Obama] Is Handling Health Care, Down Five Percentage Points In The Last Few Months.”

Brownback Continues Fiscal Responsibility

Brownback Co-Sponsors Bipartisan Task Force for Responsible Fiscal Action

U.S. Senator Sam Brownback co-sponsored the Bipartisan Task Force for Responsible Fiscal Action Act, introduced today. The legislation would establish a bipartisan task force that would review federal government spending and make recommendations for cutting programs that are redundant or unsustainable.

“Federal spending is out of control, and it is past time that Congress takes steps to rein it in,” said Brownback. “The Bipartisan Task Force for Responsible Fiscal Action Act is a common sense approach to making better decisions about where and how tax payer money is spent. In these tough economic times, it should be a no-brainer that the government should now, more than ever, take action to end unnecessary spending.”

Brownback continued, “For years I have championed similar legislation that would establish better oversight of government spending; I recognize the importance of making sure the government is exercising fiscal restraint. I am therefore hopeful that this legislation will be passed quickly by my colleagues.”

Roberts Continues Fiscal Responsibility

In light of President Obama's jobs summit and a possible new stimulus/jobs bill - Senator Roberts released the following.

"We cannot spend our way into creating jobs. Despite billions in stimulus spending, we have little to show for it and record numbers of unemployment," Senator Roberts said.

"TARP authority should end on December 31^st rather than continue on as a slush fund to be used at Treasury and president’s discretion," Roberts said. "This money does not belong to us. It should be used to pay down the deficit for our grandchildren."

Boxer: Abortions are Like Viagra or Something

Speaking on the floor of the U.S. Senate yesterday during the debate on abortion in the health care bill, liberal California Senator Barbara Boxer once again went off the deep end. Her rationale for allowing taxpayer funding for abortions is this: If men get coverage for Viagra, women should get coverage to abort their child. See the clip below.

KS-01 Race Highlighted on RedState

According to RedState - Wasinger and Huelskamp are leading the pack in KS-01.

'In KS-01, there are several conservatives running, but two really, really stand out. Tim Huelskamp and Rob Wasinger. They are both fine men. I don’t have an unkind word to say about either. The Club for Growth has lined up behind.

However we have a problem: the two good conservatives in each race are in danger of cutting into each others’ votes thereby helping the squishy guy get elected. Tim. Fred Thompson has lined up behind Rob.

Let’s pay attention. Let’s see who proves viability. We may have to weigh in to ensure across the board conservatives get the nomination. I hope the candidates themselves will be honest with themselves. From years of running campaigns, I know that is sometimes the hardest thing to do. But we have a chance in both districts to improve on the men who are leaving by elected guys with even better conservative bona fides. We cannot afford to blow it.'

On the FEC website - there are still 8 Republicans fighting for their party's nomination. And there's still the lone Democrat, Alan Jilka, hoping for a bloody enough primary that he can somehow over come Moran's 80% R win in 2008.

ObamaCare in Jeapordy?

The Senate narrowly rejected (45-54) an amendment that would have restricted abortion coverage in the pending health-care bill, leaving in question whether Majority Leader Harry Reid (Nev.) has the 60 votes needed to move the bill toward final passage. Luckily for us - Senators Brownback and Roberts both supported the amendment.

A few weeks earlier the House passed the Stupak amendment to their health reform bill to prohibit the use of federal dollars to pay for abortion. Do surprise here - Rep. Moran, Tiahrt and Jenkins supported the amendment while Rep. Moore opposed.

The measure addressed the scope of restrictions on coverage of abortion services for people who receive subsidies to buy insurance. The outcome was expected, but could cost the support of Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.), who has threatened to filibuster the $848 billion bill unless abortion restrictions are tightened.

Senate Primary - Anyone's Race

SurveyUSA released another poll this week in the Kansas Senate Primary. Jerry Moran is leading Todd Tiarht - 37% - 34%. With still close to 30% undecided. Looks like these two are going to start spending some of their campaign cash to started educating the rest of the state (outside their districts) on what they stand for.

Most interesting is when you look at the Ideology breakdown of the results.

Conservative Rs break for Tiahrt: 40-33%
Moderate Rs break for Moran: 46-25%
Liberal Rs breaks slightly for Moran: 30-28%

The candidates have finished inside of the survey's theoretical margin of sampling error in 4 of 5 SurveyUSA tracking polls.

Wiggins a Triple Threat?

Tom Wiggins created a stir a couple weeks ago when he threw is hat in the ring for Governor....or Senate....

Seems the former California Republican just can't seem to decide how he can best serve Kansans. And now with Dennis Moore retiring, rumors are that he may throw his hat in this third ring and compete for the triple crown. We're hearing he's already willing to commit $3 million to the race. But is that enough to overshadow the face that he hasn't lived in the state for 20-30 years.

We encourage our readers to contact Mr. Wiggins (913-839-3543 or 913-341-5597) and ask him to make a decision on what he's running for - Gov, Senate, House, Kansas Czar or local dog catcher. Regardless of what it is - we're confident Kansans won't appreciate his idea that they can be bought.

Happy Jobs Summit Day

When times are tough - wants the best solution? Get together and talk about the problem, but don't announce any solutions. We wouldn't want that kind of sensitive material about how Obama plans to create jobs, to leak out before we truly need the jobs.

Today President Obama convenes plenty of politicians of his lockstep politicians as well as labor bosses and academics. After 10 months and the authorization of $787 billion in government spending, the economic policies of the White House and the Democratic Congress have failed. 15.7 million Americans are out of work, 3.2 million of them since the stimulus was first passed in February. Unemployment, at 10.2 percent, is higher than the President promised it would be if he did nothing. The Obama-Pelosi-Reid economic policies are hurting, not helping.

When will the President learn that we're sick and tired of his lofty rhetoric - it's time for him to develop real solutions. Don't just throw money at the problem with another stimulus, it clearly didn't work the first time.

State Senator Huntington?

Kansas state Sen. David Wysong of Mission Hills has mailed letters to GOP precinct committeemen and women announcing that he is resigning his seat. In the letter, Wysong asked the party leaders to join him in supporting four-term State Rep. Terrie Huntington, a Mission Hills Republican, as his replacement. Huntington currently serves as Chair of the High Education committee in the House.

Wysong wrote that his resignation is "due to family considerations." His last day in office will be Dec. 13.

Wysong, 60, has served a decade in public office as a Mission Hills city councilman, Johnson County commissioner, chairman of the Johnson County Republican Party and 7th District State Senator. He is currently chair of the Senate Commerce Committee and serves on the Ways and Means Committee.

"I have enjoyed my public life experience but it is actually past time for this decision. I have met some amazing people along the way. Very, very smart people who only have one thing in mind and that is to help the people of Johnson County and the State of Kansas."

State law requires that Ronnie Metsker, the Johnson County GOP chair, will call a precinct committee meeting for the purpose of selecting Wysong's successor.

Is 2010 the Age of Aquarius?

A couple weeks ago we gave an update on State Senator Laura Kelly who is challenging Rep. Jenkins for the 2nd congressional district. After surveying her campagin website which gives us little detail - we reported on some of the interesting findings on her MySpace page. Unfortunately, Liberal Laura is staying true to her astrological sign and has rebelliously taken down the site.

Aquarians can be stubborn in their opinions. They can become impatient with those who don't see their point of view and disagree with them. They embrace their eccentric ideas so much that they can be viewed as rebellious and unpredictable. Famous politicians who are also Aquarians - Franklin D. Roosevelt, Mozart and Oprah!

Sorry if we've offended you Laura. Please don't become impatient with us. We simply would like to know where you stand on Obama's trillion dollar stimulus plan, the national energy tax, a government health care option that rations care and using tax-payer money to pay for abortions. Guess we'll just keep checking her website or other new media for updates.

Obama: 75% Support for Our Troops

Tonight President Obama layed out his strategy for the War in Afghanistan. After months of delay, he announced to no one's surprise that he would not be requesting the full 40,000 troop surge the Generals on the ground asked for. He thinks they can manage with 75% - 30,000. He is going to request that the UN supply the additional 10,000 so I guess we can let him be on that one.

The most troubling part is that he has once again set a completion date for himself. He wants the first troops to begin withdrawing by July 2011. Declaring a timetable for a withdrawal would merely send the Taliban underground until the Americans began to leave. It also sends the wrong message to our troops - that no matter how hard they work and successful they are, they may still have to pull out before the job is done.

According to the latest Gallop poll - 35% of Americans approve of the way President Obama is handling the war in Afghanistan. 55% disappove and had we been asked - we'd have checked this box.

Senator Roberts' - I remain concerned that artificial time lines for withdrawal will tie the hands and further endanger our men and women in uniform while emboldening the Taliban and other terrorists. I hope this will not be the case.

KS-03: Come One, Come All

Within hours of the story breaking that Rep. Dennis Moore would not be seeking reelection - numerous Republicans in the 3rd put out statements regarding their interest in the seat. Cook Political Report moved KS-03 from "Likely Dem" to "Toss up". Below is an updated list of candidates considering joining the field for the Republican nomination.

State Sen. Jeff Colyer: "Put me in the very serious column.. we'll have an announcement soon."

Greg Musil: "Maybe, probably. I'll be in or out in the next two weeks.

State Sen. Karin Brownlee: "I'm thinking about it."

Charlotte O'Hara: "I'm seriously considering it"; will decide in next two weeks.

Nick Jordan: "I'm in."

State Rep. Kevin Yoder, an Overland Park Republican, is first out of the gate this morning, saying he's forming an exploratory committee.

Stick a Fork in Him - Dennis is Done

It's official - Representative Dennis Moore will not seek reelection in 2010, key Democrats said Sunday. A statement is expected today from Moore explaining his plans but we're guessing the rumors are true that he's getting some type of appointment in the administration. How else would you justify voting for the stimulus, national energy tax, government take over of health care and cosponsor card check?

This will now be the 3rd open congressional seat of Kansas' 4 districts. Looks like the KDP and the DCCC are going to have their work cut out for them on this one. We assume the Republican primary will get a lot more crowded with this good news. Currently in the race for the Republican nomination are Patricia Lightner, Daniel Gilyeat, John Rysavy and Thomas Scherer. Rumors of Dr. Stephen Reintjes, Greg Musil and Charlotte O'Hara still considering....

Although in 2008 the district voted for Obama, it still has a Partisan Voting Index of Republican +3. Assuming the Democrats can't find a billionaire who used to be a Republican to run on their ticket like they're doing for Governor, we have a real shot at taking this one back!

The Broken Promises Continue

President Obama acknowledged for the first time on Wednesday that his administration would miss a self-imposed deadline to close the detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, by mid-January, admitting the difficulties of following through on one of his first pledges as president.

On Guantanamo, Mr. Obama said that he now hoped to shut down the detention facility sometime next year, but he did not set a new deadline.

Perhaps he's beginning to understand that no American wants these detainees in 'their backyard' which doesn't exactly leave him with a lot of options. The latest reports now list Illinois has a possible location - perhaps he thinks if he puts them in his backyard it will make it all fair? As long as he doesn't move them to Leavenworth, KS

Stimulus II Doomed?

Remember when President Obama passed the $1 trillion stimulus plan - promising that this would keep unemployment below 8%?

Well now unemployment is at 10.2% AND following Obama's early Dec. jobs summit - there's word that he pay try to pass another stimulus/recovery package.

This news is a little startling when the recovery.gov website is reporting money spent and jobs saved in Congressional districts that don't exist.

Laura Kelly: Slim, Single and Running for Congress!

Liberal State Senator Laura Kelly threw her hat in the ring to run for Congress a few months ago. She remains a relative unknown to Kansans outside of Shawnee county. However, following her announcement to run, she has made quite the splash online. She's on popular social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace. But her MySpace is the most intriguing.

Here are a few observations worth mentioning:

According to Kelly's MySpace, she is out, proud, and SINGLE! We thought she was married, at least according to her website, but it shows she logged in the day before yesterday, on November 16. Is this simply a mistake or has Laura "gone rogue" in Cyberland?
Secondly, she's profiled herself as Slim/Slender. Perhaps as to lure in perspective suitors? I mean who doesn't want a member of Congress that is fit and trim? You betcha! Maybe Kelly can pull a Palin and make the cover of Newsweek in a runner's outfit.
Last, but certainly not least, Kelly is a proud Aquarius. haha...more on that later. Not to mention, Kelly's mood is "neutral". Come on Laura, get excited! You're running for Congress!

Just as soon as we finish this post, we are going to befriend liberal Laura on MySpace. Who doesn't want a friend that is nearly 60, slim, single, and an Aquarius! Like our friend Tom Wiggans, the last thing we want to see if liberal Laura in Congress. But we LOVE her on MySpace!

We know you haven't been back in the state in 20 or 30 years...or is it more? So we wanted to offer our services and help you out before you begin your big journey across our beautiful state. Hopefully these tips and suggestions will make your stay in Kansas a little more comfortable.

Before you hit the road, it's probably good to brush up on your Kansas facts. So feel free to take this quiz. It might take you a handful of tries to nail all the answers, but who's counting?
Now, this will be a long journey. We are sure you are used to flying in style - first class, private jets even. But once the campaign begins, you'll need to look like an average Kansan. So ditch the suit and tie for something casual like khakis and a button up (don't forget to roll up the sleeves). Ya know, this can help you connect with hardworking Kansans.
Buy a Garmin. For one, they are made right here in Kansas. Second, there are a whopping 105 counties in our state - yup, 105. We don't want you getting lost. You'll want to hit each county at least 4 or 5 times...you have to make up for lost time. And apologies, we don't have any bays, wind-surfing, or Rice-a-Roni..well maybe check for that last one in the local supermarket.
California isn't really popular here. They're basically bankrupt, liberal, and well, just keep quiet about your time there.
Did you only give Obama $5,000 to help elect "change"? Or was it more? Nonetheless, keep that hush hush as well. Kansans aren't big fans of Mr. Obama.
Kansans won't blame you for leaving the business world when you did. This Administration is running our economy into the ground and with all the regulation, taxes, and spending they're piling on, it's only going to get worse. So good timing on that one! But can we ask: do you want your $5,000 back?
You don't need to overplay Kansas stereotypes to jive with us. We noticed your wheat-inspired logo on your website. We are proud of what we do, but just keep the Dorothy, wheat, flat land, and cow references to a minimum. We know who we are.
Keep your supporters in line. Yeah, Democrats are pretty bitter here in Kansas and they tend to attack our patriotic inclinations, fondness of religion, and anything that isn't "progressive" enough for them. Please don't bash on us or stick your nose up at us...your party has already perfected that.
We had an individual involved in the pharmaceutical industry who ran for Congress recently. She didn't last long. Just sayin'.
Last of all, be yourself. We're pretty nice people once you get to know us. So best of luck as you get to know our state and the people of Kansas. Not a chance we want you in office, but enjoy the ride! And let us know how fun it is to spend millions of your own dollars on a political race. That has to be awesome!

ObamaCare at a Standstill in the Senate?

Dem Senators are peeling off of President Obama’s government takeover of health care and its liberal fantasy land that spends more than a trillion and contains hundreds of billions in new taxes.

As James Carville told CNN, President Obama only has 57 votes.

Reuters is reporting that Senators Liberman, Landrieu and Nelson are at NO, and Bayh maybe too.

As we all know, no 60 votes, no laundry. (Senator Reid needs 60 votes to break the filibuster on the motion to proceed to consider the bill. If he does not get 60 votes, ObamaCare never comes up on the Senate floor.)

Luckily we can count on Senators Brownback and Roberts to oppose this expensive, government takeover of the health care system.

Poll Watch: Obama's Approval Still Decreasing

According to yesterday's Rasmussen tracking poll - Fifty-three percent (53%) of voters disapproved of the President's performance. 46% of voters say they at least somewhat approve.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 45% now favor the health care plan proposed by President Obama and congressional Democrats. Most (52%) remain opposed.

Fifty-eight percent (58%) of likely voters say it is at least somewhat likely the next president of the United States will be a Republican. The number has been trending in this direction since Democrat Barack Obama took office in January and is up 14 points since then.

Is the following the kind of government you want?

One that raises your already too high taxes.

One that pushes a health care plan that even the author doesn't understand.

One that uses scare tactics to try to pass a bill.

One that calls you a racist if you do not agree with the administration.

One that wants the government to control everything from the media to your life, and even your death.

One that has tried, and is still trying, to spend us into bankruptcy.

If you're saying no, I suggest you let your voices be heard by writing your senators and representatives. If you're not saying no, I feel sorry for you, your children and your grandchildren and their future.

Then, there is our interim governor, who has said the state might have to raise taxes. Can we afford him and more taxes?

(Not So) BREAKING NEWS: Moore Supports Taxes

The House Democrat health care bill, H.R. 3962 passed the House late Saturday night. To no one's surprise (except voters of the 3rd district) Dennis Moore was the lone Kansan support the legislation.

It's appaling that Moore still refers to himself as a 'fiscally responsible blue dog'. This legislation costs over $1 trillion, contains over $700 bill in new taxes on individuals and small business and according to Obama's economic advisors - kills over 5.5 million jobs.

Moore's op-ed on the issue says: I will be voting for this bill because it addresses the issues of affordability, fiscal responsibility, quality and choice. We can no longer afford to do nothing.

We'll give him choice - he did vote against the Stupak amendment to ban federal funding of abortions but as for quality (rationed) care and fiscal responsibility? We're just not buying it anymore Dennis. Despite the 3rd district voting for Obama in 2006 - we here at What's Right With Kansas are convinced this is the year to beat him.

Kansans Mourn Avery

One-term Republican governor, William Avery, has died, the governor's office said Thursday. He was 98.

“Governor Avery led our state during a time of tragic loss and national attention. Kansas honors his long life and service to our state. Our thoughts and prayers are with his children and family,” Parkinson said in a statement.

Avery began a decade-long career as a congressman from the 2nd District before running for governor. Avery served his one term from 1965-66, when a governor's term was two years. He was defeated for re-election by Democrat Robert Docking, receiving 44 percent of the vote.

His most notable achievement as the state's 37th governor was recommending the establishment of a state income tax withholding system in 1965. It was part of a package of income and sales tax increases to improve public schools.

During his term, he denied a reprieve request from Perry Smith and Richard Hickock, who were hanged at Lansing State Prison on April 14, 1965, for the 1959 slayings of Herbert Clutter, his wife and two children, in Holcomb. The murders were immortalized by Truman Capote in his novel “In Cold Blood.”

Another controversy was a bill directing the state Board of Health to give out birth control information along with contraceptives to married couples. Avery said he was pressured to veto the measure but let it become law without his signature.

After being turned out of office, Avery moved to Wichita where he became an oil company executive. In 1968, he made a final bid for public office when he lost the GOP primary for the U.S. Senate to Bob Dole. In 1977, he returned to Wakefield to resume a role with the Farmers and Merchants Bank. In 2000, the post office in his hometown was renamed in his honor.

Republican Health Plan Unveiled

Kansans across the state agreed back in office - the Democrats 1,000+ health bill (HR 3200) was just not something we could support. It increased the defiict, taxed businesses and had a government run option that could eventually take over their entire health care system, and not play fair.

How did Democrats respond - they nearly doubled the size of the bill. HR 3962 is 1,990 pages long, still included a public option, mandates individuals purchase 'government (essentially Kathleen Sebelius) approved health care and mandates businesses purchase health care or pay a fee. Democrats introduced this new legislation last Thursday and were hoping to have a final bill pass the House by Columbus Day. They have been very vocal about how they intend to keep the process behind closed doors - not allowing amendments on the floor. They will allow Democrats a managers amendment for any last minute changes and then allow Republicans one substitute.

The Republican substitute has been leaked - feel free to check it out HERE. From first glance we appreciate that during this troubled economy, Republicans are focused on reforms that our country can afford to work on now. They also kept in at 230 pages - something people can actually read before voting!

Republican Leader John Boehner had the following to say about the substitute:

“Republicans have outlined a plan to lower costs and expand access at a price our nation can afford. This includes letting families buy health insurance across state lines, allowing small businesses to pool together and offer health insurance to their employees at much lower costs, just like big businesses and unions can today, giving states the tools to create innovative reforms that lower costs and ending junk lawsuits that contribute to high health care costs. Given all that’s at stake, the American people deserve to see the Republicans’ smart, fiscally responsible plans debated here on the House floor side-by-side with the Speaker’s 1,990-page bill. And I hope we will see that debate and a vote as soon as possible.”

Gingrich heads to Larry

Former Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich will be in Lawrence tomorrow Nov. 4. First elected U.S. Representative from Georgia in 1978, Gingrich became a natural leader in the House. He led the Republican party to regain control of Congress in 1994 and became the first Republican speaker in nearly 50 years. Gingrich served as Speaker of the House from 1995 to 1999.

Election Night Preview

We are confident Election Day 2009 will prove better for Republicans than what took place in 2008. Here is a rundown of races to watch tonight and what we think will be the outcome.

Virginia Governor Race: Democrat Creigh Deeds v. Republican Bob McDonnell
This has been an embarrassment for President Obama and Democrats. The latest polling shows McDonnell beating Deeds by 10+ points.
McDonnell defeated Deeds before in a race for Attorney General. We predict Deeds will get his second beating tonight. Here's predicting a big McDonnell win!

New Jersey Governor Race: Democrat Jon Corzine v. Republican Chris Christie v. Independent Chris Daggett
New Jersey is a heavyily blue state and one that's always tough to win for Republicans. The corrupt failure and multi-millionaire liberal Jon Corzine continues to pour loads of money into his own campaign. We believe this race is too close to call because we're not sure how many people will end up getting out to vote for Independent Chris Daggett. NY-23: Conservative Doug Hoffman v. Democrat Bill Owens
The focus of this race has mostly been the rift between Republicans over former candidate and liberal Dede Scozzafava and Conservative Doug Hoffman. After Scozzafava dropped out this weekend, it's a two man race and, we believe, Hoffman's to lose. Owens is a weak candidate and out of step with the district. So we're predicting a sizeable Hoffman win tonight!

The health care bill recently unveiled by Speaker Pelosi is over 1,900 pages for a reason. It is much easier to dispense goodies to favored interest groups if they are surrounded by a lot of legislative legalese.

Section 2531, entitled “Medical Liability Alternatives,” establishes an incentive program for states to adopt and implement alternatives to medical liability litigation. [But]…… a state is not eligible for the incentive payments if that state puts a law on the books that limits attorneys’ fees or imposes caps on damages.

So, you can’t try to seek alternatives to lawsuits if you’ve actually done something to implement alternatives to lawsuits. Brilliant! The trial lawyers must be very happy today. Looks like Queen Kathy has found another way to give a kickback to her old trial lawyer friends. As you may remember she was the former Executive Director of the Kansas Trial Lawyers Association.

The Greater Salina Chamber of Commerce announced today that Sarah Palin will be the featured speaker at their annual banquet and membership meeting February 5, 2010.

"We are so pleased that Governor Sarah Palin has accepted our invitation to come to Salina as our keynote speaker for the Chamber's annual meeting," Daran Neuschafer, Chairman of the Chamber said. "Governor Palin was clearly identified as a top choice as speaker early in the process, and the event committee is thrilled that she'll be with us February."

We wrote earlier today about the Obama Administration's botched response to the H1N1 virus.

It gets even worse! As Americans wait in long lines and face shortages of the vaccine, guess who is getting A list treatment? Terrorists being held at Guanatanamo Bay.

Yup, 13 WIBW in Topeka reports that the "Pentagon will offer the H1N1 vaccination to detainees at the U.S. facility at Guantanamo Bay". According to Maj. Diana R. Haynie, a spokeswoman for Joint Task Force Guantanamo Bay, "JTF Guantanamo conducts safe, humane, legal and transparent care and custody of detainees. As such, we must provide detainees the medical care necessary to maintain their health."

Excuse us for not getting all warm and fuzzy about this, but what about the millions of men, women, and American children who do not have access to this vaccination? Who is standing up for them?

Oh and Haynie also noted, "Some of the detainees have already voluntarily taken the seasonal flu shot".

Sebelius: Lack of Magic to Blame for Botched H1N1 Response

Kansas' own Kathleen Sebelius takes the cake for another example of incompetence coming from both the federal government and the Obama Administration. Lately, Kansans and Americans across the country have been faced with waiting lines reminiscent of the lines people had to wait in to vote in last November's election. But this time, instead of voting for "change", they're trying to protect themselves against a deadly virus.

Last week, The New York Times reported Sebelius' excuse for the Obama Administration's lack of preparedness and what does she blame? The fact she's not magic...oh, and government's too big.

“If we could wave a magic wand or have the tools in our government shop to fix this,” Sebelius said, “I think there would be a different expectation.”

Okay, I guess we can't blame you Kathy for not dabbling in witchcraft and magic (imagine what the Pope would say about you then! Excommunication anyone?)...but we are glad you have FINALLY admitted that the federal government is too big, burly, and bogged down by red tape that it can no longer serve the American people.

Change we can really believe in! Just wait until Pelosi pushes through the government takeover of health care that will lead to the kind of rationing we're seeing with the H1N1 vaccine.

Help Coming for Treece

Roberts, Brownback and Jenkins announced yesterday that Congress has approved legislation to provide the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) the authority to buyout Treece, Kansas. The legislation will allow the EPA to protect and improve the lives of residents living with the daily threat of contamination and health related risks from long abandoned lead and zinc mining should a federal buyout be initiated. The bill now heads to the President’s desk where it is expected to be signed into law by Saturday.

“With this important first step, I look forward to working with Administrator Jackson and her team on a long term solution for residents of Treece,” Roberts said. “I applaud the EPA for going the extra mile, sending representatives to the area to listen to residents firsthand, and then understanding their special hardships. Together, I think we can now give these folks a little hope.”

The Cash for Clunkers program helped consumers who turned in gas guzzlers buy nearly 700,000 more fuel efficient vehicles in fewer than 30 days. Sounds good right?

WRONG! A report by automotive Web site Edmunds.com says the program actually cost taxpayers $24,000 per car sold. Only 18%, of the sales were additonal to normal car buying trends -- the remaining 82% of sales would have happened regardless of the program.

Obama and the Democrats chose to add another $3 billion to their spending spree to help out 125,000 people. $24,600 per car = the average $4,000 rebate the customer got? Sounds like fuzzy math to us

What happened to the current health care crisis in America, the H1N1 National Emergency, the less than 3 months he's given himself to close Gitmo and move its dangerous detainees to our backyards. What about his pledge to end the war - instead he's decided to simply leave our troops in harms way in Afghanistan, delaying a decision on the requested troop surge.

Perhaps he thinks since he's already won the Noble Peace Prize his work is finished. Any other ideas on a better way for Obama to spend his time? Playing with his kids, fundraising for ACORN, appointing CZARS, campaigning for Democrats in NJ and VA?

Democrats leaders today came out in strong support of their health reform proposals. Speaker Pelosi reassured - "At the end of the day we will have a public option" in the House bill. Senate Majority Leader Hoyer confirmed that the Senate too will have a public option. However, it will contain an 'opt out' clause for States. Good thing since the low reimbursement levels of Medicare and the proposed cuts to the program in both Chambers' versions will further bankrupt our states - at least this will allow for states to be smart enough to avoid this government-run option.

Luck for us in Kansas - some of our leaders in the State Legislature are already on top of it. Sen. Mary Pilcher Cook and Reps. Brenda Landwehr and Peggy Mast will hold a series of press conferences Tuesday to announce their sponsorship of bills to exempt Kansas from any federal health reform legislation.

The veridict is in. Former Senator and Presidential Candidate, Fred Thompson, has endorsed Kris Kobach for Secretary of State.

"Kris Kobach served the country with great distinction at the Department of Justice during the Bush Administration," Thompson said. "He served my campaign equally well in 2008. He will perform invaluable service to the people of Kansas as Secretary of State. Kansas can trust him to protect the integrity of elections."

Kobach, law professor and former state Republican party chair, is running for the Republican nomination for Secretary of State against JR Claeys, Salina native and former head of the National Association of Government Contractors (NAGC).

Both candidates tout winning straw polls on their website but we'll wait until year end finance reports come out to who Kansans are really backing.

The House Ways and Means committee has compared the White House's projection of the number of jobs that would be created by the 2009 stimulus law (through the end of 2010) with the actual change in state payroll employment through September 2009. According to the data, 49 States and the District of Columbia have lost jobs since stimulus was enacted. While President Obama claimed the result of his stimulus bill would be the creation of 3.5 million jobs, the Nation has already lost a total of 2.7 million – a difference of 6.2 million jobs.

According to their chart - Kansas was projected to gain 33,000 jobs due to the stimulus but in reality 45,400 Kansans have lost their jobs since the so called economic stimulus was signed into law.

Since this stimulus is certainly not helping Kansans - we're proud of 5 of the 6 members of our delegation who opposed its passage. Bets on who the lone supporter was?

Glimmer of Fundraising Hope?

The Republican National Committee, which raised $8.8 million in September has outraised the Democratic National Committee for the second month in a row (the DNC pulled in $8 million in Sept).

An uglier note however - the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee raised $7.05 million in the month – its second-highest monthly total this year – and now has banked $14.7 million for the 2010 midterms. The National Republican Congressional Committee raised $3.4 million for the month, and ended the month with $4.3 million cash-on-hand.

Despite the cash disadvantage, we're confident that if Speaker Pelosi makes her troops (specifically those Dems representing Bush districts) vote for a government-run public option on top of a national energy tax and unsuccessful economic stimulus package - the money as well as voters will start returning to the Republican party.

KS-01 - Safer Republican

The lone democrat in the race to replace Congressman Jerry Moran, Alan Jilka, has had a lawsuit filed against him. The former director of the Salina Housing Authority has sued Jilka, alleging that she was fired because she refused Jilka’s sexual advances.

Johnson’s lawsuit alleges that she was the victim of sexual and gender discrimination. She is seeking unspecified damages. Jilka told The Salina Journal that the charges are “frivolous and preposterous.”

When Jilka announced his candidacy -he "expressed his desire to fight against the traditional partisan politics that have become the hallmark of the status quo in Washington and produced a stalemate in our nation’s capital."

Perhaps Mr. Jilka should abandon the shady antics of Paul Morrison and Eliot Spitzer and follow suit by leaving the political arena.

ACORN - the countdown

On October 1, 2009, the President signed a Continuing Resolution in which Congress included the following provision which prohibited ACORN from accessing federal funding:

Sec. 163. None of the funds made available by this joint resolution or any prior Act may be provided to the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN), or any of its affiliates, subsidiaries, or allied organizations.

However, this expires on October 31, 2009. Even if Congress passes its appropriations bills before November 1st, unless they include that language in all 12 appropriations bills, ACORN will be eligible for funding again. The only way to ensure that ACORN is barred from federal funds across the board and for more than a brief time is for the White House to suspend and bar ACORN from federal funds.

Any ideas on what President Obama will do in this situation - placed between his friends and the American people?

ObamaCare - Time for Bipartisan solutions?

The latest Rasmussen poll shows that 54% of Americans oppose the health care plan proposed by the President and Congressional Democrats.

This news comes on the same day that Senate Democrats on the Finance committee release their bill. WAIT - we know what you're thinking. The Senate Finance committee already passed their bill? Correct. They marked up a 200+ page summary of their legislation and the final 1,500+ page bill was just released today. Interesting...

Don't worry about having enough time to read this bill though - this won't actually be what they vote on either. Senate Majority Leader Reid and Sens. Max Baucus and Chris Dodd along with senior White House aides are merging the Finance and Health Committee legislation into one bill that will be considered on the floor of the Senate. Although the committee defeated Senator Roberts amendment to allow the bill to be posted online 72 hours before a vote so members and the American people can read it - I'm sure President Obama will live up to his promise of transparency through this debate.

But what we will do is, we'll have the negotiations televised on C-SPAN, so that people can see who is making arguments on behalf of their constituents, and who are making arguments on behalf of the drug companies or the insurance companies. And so, that approach, I think is what is going to allow people to stay involved in this process."

Brownback (or Moran/Tiahrt) v. Glickman?

Though we love the idea of Senator Brownback or the Republican nominee for Senate running again former Congressman Dan Glickman - who's even less known state wide than Jim Slattery (lost to Roberts with less than 40% of the vote) we think it's unlikely he'll enter the race. Glickman announced today that he will be stepping down from his post at the Motion Picture Association next September

Back in July, Glickman said - 'I have not spent an exceptionally high amount of time in the state in the last few years. Periodically, people at home talk to me about this, but I haven’t bought a house in Wichita, and I haven’t made frequent trips there.'

Although Slattery repeatedly turned down rumors before finally announcing, we're not putting any money on Glickman entering the race. With Larry Gates announcing he's out last week - it was basically an admission from the Kansas Democratic Party that they had no credible candidate, or even a Joe Democrat like Gates to put on the ballot.

Although, I guess there's still State Senator Chris Steineger....HERE. Looks like they're putting all their Liberal, organic, cage-free eggs in one basket - Raj Goyle.

KS-04 Primary - Early Poll

State Senatory Dick Kelsey released a very early poll today in the race for the Republican nomination for KS-04 Todd Tiahrt's seat. The poll surveyed 351 likely Republican Primary voters and had a margin of error of 4.3%.

Anderson 4%

Most important thing to keep in mind about the poll is that 49% of KS-04 Republican primary voters were undecided. Clearly showing that it is Oct 2009 and voters are extremely unfamiliary with the array of candidates in the race. 3rd quarter finance reports filed yesterday show National Committeeman Mike Pompeo leading in cash on hand ($270,000) and amount raised to date ($350,000). Senator Kelsey is in 2nd with $60,000 on hand and having raised $136,000 (including $132,500 personal loan) so far. Looks like at this point it time it is still anyone's race.

Obama to Seniors: Cha-Ching

Despite the fact the health care in Congress will cut upwards of $500 billion from Medicare, Obama isn't wasting anytime courting a key demographic in American politics.

Yesterday, the White House threw out the idea of giving each senior a big payout - $250 - so they can go buy, an iPod or something. New dentures? That little check would cost an addition $13 billion.

"These payments will provide aid to more than 50 million people in the coming year, relief that will not only make a difference for them, but for our economy as a whole, complementing the tax cuts we've provided working families and small businesses through the Recovery Act," Obama said in a statement.

We didn't think Obama would be paying off seniors in the first year of his presidency in order to quell their anger from the awful health care bill being shoved down America's throat. But here it is folks. This will do NOTHING to help the economy and most likely infuriate the seniors who are already angry about their health care being jeopardized by the health care overhaul. A real example of change we can believe in.

ObamaCare - One Scary Step Closer

The Democrats government health care bill (and by bill we mean 260 page draft document) passed the Senate Finance committee today 14-9. We know what you're thinking - aren't there 10 Republicans on the committee? CORRECT

Maine Senator Olympia Snowe voted in favor of the Baucus legislation. Rumors have it that Snowe will still be opposed to the final legislation in the Senate if it includes the public (GOVERNMENT-RUN) option.

Now we all wait and see what Senator Harry Reid will come up with. He now has the power to merge the Senate HELP and Finance committee bills together and basically bring whatever final version to the floor that he wants. Luckily Senator Liebermann has come out public saying he is opposed to the Baucus bill and in a surprising alliance for Republicans - about 30 Unions are opposing this version as well. Though they're opposed because they want a public option included but also because of the taxes it would impose on expensive insurance policies.

Lucky for us Kansans - we can continue to count on Senators Brownback and Roberts to push for reform that won't include a government take over of the system, increase the deficit or make cuts to Medicare.

The Myth of "Independent" Democrats

Remember back in 2008 when then Senator Barack Obama promised a "new era in politics"...a time when he would transcend the partisan divide? Remember when he talked about how there aren't blue state or red states, but rather the "United States"? At each campaign event, Obama promised change, a break from partisanship.

And in the past 10 months, we've seen him and his party push a partisan, ideologically narrow agenda. Just as Kansans weren't fooled by Obama's promise of "independence", neither will they be fooled by so-called independent candidates in 2010.

Liberals Laura Kelly and Raj Goyle are another example of this bait and switch politics.

Goyle's website says it is time for "strong, independent" leadership. Kelly, who announced her run last Friday for Congress, said she would bring "common sense" to Congress.

We have heard this mantra before. Both Kelly and Goyle have strong ties to the partisan, liberal wing of the Democrat Party. Kelly has close ties to Governor Kathleen Sebelius, who is now pushing hard for a government takeover of health care. Kelly campaigned hard for Sebelius' gubernatorial races and Sebelius returned the favor, recording robo-calls for Kelly's state senate run.

Likewise, Goyle spent most of his college years dedicated to the College Democrats, leading the charge against Bob Dole's candidacy on his campus in 1996. He even worked on Clinton/Gore's 1996 campaign. Goyle also has strong ties to the ACLU, where he worked, the Center for American Progress, a liberal think tank, and the most liberal of activist groups, DailyKos.

There's no question this duo would be voting lock-step with Pelosi and Co., just as we have seen Dennis Moore do in the 3rd district. Over the next year, we will be covering the liberal records of Kelly and Goyle and why Kansas cannot afford to have them in Congress.

The promise of "independence" has been made before and each time, proven a myth. This time will be no different.

Obama: He's Here To Save Us

We are disappointed to report that a previously lauded institution took, quite possibly, it's final steps in to the realm in insignificance today. That's right, we too woke up this morning to hear the jaw dropping news that President Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009. The Nobel committee cited the Presidents establishment of a "new climate in international politics" and gave "special importance to Obama's vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons" as the contributing factors to Obama's victory. We can't forget to mention the nomination deadline was just 11 days into Obama's presidency. Yeah, 11.

Now in all fairness the Noble committee has been doing their best to to make this award as trivial, inconsequential and irrelevant as possible over the last decade, awarding the Peace prize to the colossal dolts Jimmy Carter, Al Gore, and terrorist Yassir Arafat. This move, however, puts the Noble Peace Prize into the same category as those ever respected Day Time Emmy's.

The choice was even more surprising given that the President was only in office for 10 days prior to the February 1st nomination deadline. It is deplorable that an institution who has previously honored figures such as Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King Jr. bought into campaign rhetoric and bestowed their highest honor based on hope and potential. We hope that Mr. Obama uses his 1.4 million dollar prize money to pay down the massive about of debt he has saddled upon this nation.
